PROPOSALS to give tax relief on nannies as a way of helping mothers back into work are
being studied by Labour.
The plan has been rejected in the past by Labour as elitist but in an interview published in today's She magazine, Mr Tony Blair says his party is considering it.
Challenged on the party's views on childcare, Mr Blair says: "We feel a combination of public and private provision is the right way to go."
Asked specifically about concessions for the salary of a nanny, Mr Blair said: "Tax relief is one of the things we are looking at."
Sources close to Mr Blair stressed that the Labour leader was not committing the party to the policy but merely confirming it as one of a "range of options under consideration".
Left-wingers will see the move as confirmation of Mr Blair 's determination to push the party away from a socialist agenda towards policies designed to appeal more to the middle classes.
